#demandaljazeera How Al Jazeera is using Twitter to get onto US cable TV Networks

Al Jazeera has been at the center of all thats been happening in Egypt and now the news channel has started using Twitter to promote itself. What they want is to convince American cable TV networks to now start broadcasting their English news channel. Although we see news and a lot of videos on the going-ons in Egypt a lot of that comes from their media coverage. They have also said that 50% of all traffic coming to their live stream is coming from the US. A spokesperson for the news network has said that they have come up with innovative ways to broadcast their news in Egypt, pamphlets have been distributed when their broadcast signal went down and these pamphlets had the latest news for people to follow.

When people couldn’t tune in because their broadcast signal went down, Al Jazeera distributed pamphlets with the latest updates and information about alternate ways to access its news coverage. It also published phoned-in reports using Scribble Live and Audioboo. Online staffs, Minty said, have been using Storify internally to curate and keep track of citizen videos and other social content. (And as many noted last week, the network has also offered up some of its coverage through Creative Commons.)


Now the company is again on Twitter and promoting itself to people around the world. #demandaljazeera is now trending no1 on worldwide trending topics.

#delicious Trend on Twitter

Contrary to rumors being circulated delicious is not being shut down. In fact Yahoo on their company blog have announced that delicious is not being shut down but will need to find a home outside the company. Delicious does have a lot of loyal and faithful users who have used this service to store all their bookmarks on the net. The panic created from the rumor that delicious is bing shut down has sent users scurrying to find an alternate service and try to export their bookmarks.

People are actively discussing the situation on Twitter and many users have started to panic. Which is not the case since the service is not actually being shut down.

#newtwitter is now trending on Twitter and that's because the new design has started rolling out to all users. New Twitter is a whole new look and feel and a re-engineered search engine. Handling over 1 billion queries a day parts of the Twitter search engine has been re-engineered to handle the load. The new search engine they say will be able to take the load for years to come.

New Twitter has a few differences from the old layout and you see your Tweets timeline on the left and on the right there has been a whole lot of space cleared up which shows you current trends. Clicking on a Twitter will bring up a pane which slides to the right and shows you the latest post and profile of the user. If the tweet contains a pic or a video that will open up on the pane on the right. There will be the standard user timeline but underneath each Tweet is additional information and even embedded media (videos/photos). If you click on an individual Tweet, a details pane will slide to the right to reveal this extra content.

Video: Usain Bolt loses a race

The world's fastest man Usain Bolt was just beaten in a 100 meters track and field event at IAAF Diamond League DN Galan meet Friday in Stockholm  by American Tyson Gay. Tyson finished the race in 9.84 seconds ahead of Usain Bolt. Usain's fastest timing however is 9.58 and that says a lot about his actual speed. 


“Just one of those days,” Bolt said. “I told you I’m not unbeatable. I did not train as hard as in past years, so I can’t complain. And it was Tyson Gay. My congratulations to him. I’m not in my best shape and he is in great shape.... I simply wasn’t ready enough for that clash.”


Usain Bolt however is now trending on the world wide topics at number 1. People on Twitter are talking about it, seems a shock that someone as fast as him can loose so easily. However it goes to show athletes at no 1. cannot afford to take chances and become lax. Usian said himself he has not been training hard enough.

#SocialNetwork is now a promoted trending topic on Twitter. The Hashtag created by Sony Pictures to promote the movie "The Social Network". The catch line for the movie is "You don't get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies". The movie is based on Mark Zuckerberg the founder of Facebook and the movie takes you through the life of Facebook up until now.

It's Spain! Oracle Paul the Psychic Octopus predicts Spain will beat Holland and win the World Cup. The world-famous octopus could be seen sitting on a tank marked with a Spanish flag for only a few minutes before grabbing out a mussel and devouring it, while completely ignoring the Dutch tank indicating a Spanish victory in Sunday's final match in the World Cup. Paul correctly predicted Germany's wins over Argentina, England, Australia and Ghana and the country's loss to Spain and Serbia.

Pulpo Paul is now trending on Twitter and not surprisingly pushed onto the trending topics by Spanish people. If Paul proves himself to be right, the Oracle who is already world famous and has a following of his own will truly go down into the annals of world cup history.

 It also needs to be noted that Paul will not be grilled or put onto the Sushi Menu because of his predictions back home in Germany. Spanish Fans have also vowed to protect him.

Magnitude 4.3 earthquake jolts Northern Illinois, Twitter spreading the word.

Twitter is already trending with the news of the earthquake that has hit Northern Illinois. News of the earthquake is spreading faster on Twitter than on traditional news channels. News of the earthquake has sent feelings of shock and fear to some users but there are no reports of any damage.


Magnitude 4 is now trending at the number 3 spot and will rise to number 1 in a short while as news of the earthquake spreads.


The U.S. Geological Survey has reported an earthquake shook the area near Dekalb, IL at 4:59:34 EST Wednesday morning.
According to the government website, the magnitude was 4.3 and took place 4 miles WNW of Virgil, IL, 5 miles E of Sycamore, IL, 5 miles N of Maple Park, IL, 8 miles ENE of DeKalb, IL, and 48 miles from Chicago.
According to USGS, "a magnitude 4.0 eastern U.S. earthquake typically can be felt at many places as far as 60 miles from where it occurred, and it infrequently causes damage near its source. A magnitude 5.5 eastern U.S. earthquake usually can be felt as far as 300 miles from where it occurred, and sometimes causes damage as far away as 25 miles."
Several viewers from South Bend, Walkerton, and Baroda MI have called WNDU reporting that they felt the tremor. We'll bring you more information as it becomes available.

A moderate earthquake struck northern Illinois Wednesday morning, waking up residents in the Chicago area.

The 4.3 magnitude quake, centered 48 miles west of Chicago near the city of Sycamore, hit at 4 a.m. local time at a depth of about 3 miles.

"The whole house shook," Walter Mockus of St. Charles told the Chicago Tribune. "The chimes that hang were all ringing. It was so loud, I thought a plane had gone down."

On Twitter, user RosaMCabrera wrote: "Earthquake woke us! In ravenswood it was a second or so."

There were no immediate reports of damage.

Quake Shakes Northern Illinois

SYCAMORE-An earthquake shook parts of northern Illinois early Wednesday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey reports a 4.3 magnitude quake centered east of Sycamore at 4 a.m. That's about 45 miles west of Chicago. 

News outlets in the Chicago area have received reports from people saying it felt like their house was shaking, but it only lasted a few seconds. There are no reports of damage or injuries.

An earthquake rattled northern Illinois early Wednesday, shaking an area about 50 miles west-northwest of Chicago, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The magnitude 4.3 quake hit just before 4 a.m. CT (5 a.m. ET), with an epicenter about 3 miles underground.
