Play FIFA Superstars free on Facebook now

With the 2010 World Cup set to kick off in a weeks time. Social Game maker Playfish has launched a new FIFA World Cup game on Facebook called FIFA Superstars.

Please click here to play now.

Although FIFA Superstars is free to play, players are required to purchase packs containing squad members that cost £1 - £2 per pack. As the tournament progresses, however, your squad members are awarded points that can then be used to purchase new team additions.

You can also play against your Facebook friends.

As the tournament progresses, each player earns points which can also be used to purchase team members.

Unlike console-based versions of Fifa games in which the player can decide to play as a manager, a player or both, on Facebook players can only be managers of virtual teams made up of real players from around the world.

They can also opt to participate in league games outside of their "friends" network.

"The Facebook version is a strategy game," said Playfish chief executive Kristian Segerstrale.

"It extends the Fifa franchise by enabling you to play with friends."

It will also reflect events as they unfold in the World Cup said Mr Segerstrale, although the details are yet to be announced.

There will be a new edition of the console version of Fifa at a later date.

Social media games developer Playfish was bought by Fifa makers Electronic Arts (EA) for $300m (£170m) in 2009.

Their Page bio on Facebook has this to say

Build your dream team by signing the world's best football players to your club. Upkeep your training and customize your formation to work your way to the top. Don't forget to challenge your friends to 1v1 matches and brag about your victory!

A message from Sid Meier!

Hello Civ Fans!

I wanted to let you know we’ll soon be looking for beta testers to help us develop a unique new way to play Civilization. Ever since we finished Civilization® Revolution™ last year, I’ve been looking at ways of expanding the Civ gameplay experience to include solo, competitive and cooperative play to take advantage of the uniqueness of social networks. We’re calling this project Civilization® Network™ and the full game will be available next year on Facebook. Civilization Network will allow you to join together with your friends to create the world’s most powerful, richest, smartest, or just plain coolest civilization. You can coordinate your strategy to win great battles, share your technology to jump ahead of your rivals, lobby your family and friends to form your own government and win vital elections, manage and grow your cities to maximize production and happiness, spy on your enemies, and work with your friends to create the great Wonders of the World. The game will offer everything you enjoy in Civ in a fully persistent environment - you can play as much as you like, whenever you like, and it’ll be free to play.

We’ll offer a closed beta of the game soon, so stay tuned for details on how you can sign-up to participate. The full game will launch in 2010. For more information about Civilization Network, including development updates and behind-the-scenes posts from me and the Firaxis team, join our Facebook fanpage here.

Thanks and Stay Civilized!

Sid Meier
Director of Creative Development
