Twitter announced on their blog that they have acquired Atebits (AKA Loren Britcher) to acquire Tweetie the leading iPhone Twitter client. Tweetie therefore will be renamed Twitter for iPhone and will be made free. Prior to the acquisition the app for available in the Apple App store for about $3 and will now be available for free.

"We're thrilled to announce that we've entered into an agreement with Atebits (aka Loren Brichter) to acquire Tweetie, a leading iPhone Twitter client. Tweetie will be renamed Twitter for iPhone and made free (currently $2.99) in the iTunes AppStore in the coming weeks. Loren will become a key member of our mobile team that is already having huge impact with device makers and service providers around the world. Loren's work won the 2009 Apple Design Award and we will eventually launch Twitter for iPad with his help.

As we work to provide the best possible Twitter experience on all of the major mobile platforms, momentum will increase dramatically. Millions more active, engaged, mobile users means more opportunities for all of us. Developers, services, and publishers will be able to leverage the Twitter iPhone and iPad applications to create additional innovative tools and integrations for users. We'll have more specific information on this once Loren is officially on board. In the meantime, please join us in welcoming Loren to the Twitter team."

Twitter for the iPad will also be launched with the help of Lauren. Other Twitter mobile clients need to see red as they may be soon out if business with Twitter now official moving into the mobile landscape and pushing it's service free of any costs to people who depend on mobile applications to use Twitter.

Loren had this to say about his experience and he seems to be more than happy to be a part of Twitter from the inside

"Now I’ll be working with them on the inside. I’m happy to say that as of today Twitter is the proud owner of Tweetie - and I’m joining their mobile team and starting work on turning Tweetie.app into Twitter.app, for iPhone and iPad."

Facebook starts sending Facebook Page weekly updates

Facebook has now started sending Facebook page updates for people who have created their own Facebook pages. Of course your page needs to have some traction before you get these updates. It is also a good way for Page creators to get the updates on how well or not so well their page is doing and your encouraged to work on it some more. This new feature of Facebook has been launched more aggressively ever since their became the most visited site in the US. Yes, for a whole week Facebook had beaten even Google to become the No1 most visited site. The whole of last week Facebook held the number one spot.

Facebook now seems to want to set the importance of their service in terms of driving traffic to your page and even your websites. It become more and more important to make sure your websites are optimized for Facebook as their importance in generating traffic grows.

People who own pages on Facebook can now get weekly updates of their pages on Facebook and think of ways to make it better and get more followers. There is no underestimating the importance of social networks like Facebook and Twitter in generating traffic to your site.

#OMGFacts Twitter Trend and Controversy.

16 year old Adorion Deck who started the @omgfacts page located here. http://twitter.com/omgfacts. in September of 2009 and amassed more that 300k+ followers spoke with ABC news.

Deck mined the internet and started posting little know facts about everything from celebs to electronics and just about everything. He was followed by all kinds of people who enjoyed his daily dose of #OMGFacts

But on Monday, Twitter taught the high school junior a lesson he'll never forget. After he posted a controversial Tweet on Dr. martin Luther King

MLK Post Creates 'Firestorm' of Criticism

"Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spent his last night on Earth having sex with two women," he posted.

And with that, the barbs started to fly.

"Unfollow @OMGFacts for their crude tweet about Martin Luther King Jr yesterday!," posted one tweeter.

"What a disrespectful way to dishonor MLK," posted another.

After realizing what he had done he deleted the Tweet and temporarily deleted his twitter account. It is now back up but no updates #OMGFacts will be an a hiatus he said.

He later said that all this success had got to his head and had started saying things to the public without thinking about things first. Twitter has taught him a lesson if you have people following you you better be aware of what you say and make sense of it too. You just don't throw things at people and think it will all be in good humor or anything close to it.

This is a lesson for all Twitter users I guess. Twitter gives you success and you had better handle it with care.

Facebook's Building a new $180 Million Custom Data Center.

Facebook announced via Jonathan Heiliger that Facebook is building a new custom built data center, at the cost price of $180 million.

"When Facebook first began with a small group of people using it and no photos or videos to display, the entire service could run on a single server. However, as the site expanded to different colleges around the U.S., we needed to add more servers and data center capacity to keep up with the increasing number of people who were joining every day.

Initially, as most Internet startups do, we leased data center space alongside other companies in the same building. As our user base continued to grow and we developed Facebook into a much richer service, we reached the point where it was more efficient to lease entire buildings on our own. We are now ready to build our own."

Jonathan also spoke about energy efficient technologies that would be used

"Energy-Efficient Technologies
Along with making sure Facebook operates quickly for you, we wanted to minimize the environmental impact of our new facility and its energy costs. To best achieve those goals, we will use several energy-efficiency technologies, including:

  • Evaporative cooling system: This system evaporates water to cool the incoming air, as opposed to traditional chiller systems that require more energy intensive equipment. This process is highly energy efficient and minimizes water consumption by using outside air.
  • Airside economizer: The facility will be cooled by simply bringing in colder air from the outside. This feature will operate for between 60 percent and 70 percent of the year. The remainder of the year requires the use of the evaporative cooling system to meet temperature and humidity requirements.
  • Re-use of server heat: A portion of the excess heat created by the computer servers will be captured and used to heat office space in the facility during the colder months.
  • Proprietary Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) technology: All data centers must have an uninterruptible power supply to continuously provide power to servers. The Prineville data center will use a new, patent-pending UPS system that reduces electricity usage by as much as 12 percent."

Facebook is definitely taking a tighter control of all their users data and would like to handel everything in-house. The New Data Center will also allow them to better protect their servers and therefore better protect their users. Facebook was a small websites without any videos and photos, users by a few people. Now it has more than 350 million users woprld wide and shows no signs or letting up in it's growth. People are shoring photos, videos, openions, playing games and helping each other. This means that the are tons of data on FB servers. All of this data is what is converting the website into gold and this needs to be protected.

Facebook looks like it is taking everything seriously. They are also cutting out Ads from Microsoft as they would like to handel their Ads by themselves. As you will know FB ads are very different and creative. Soemthing not to be seen on other sites.

Facebook has a lot of creativity and technology to come up with and implement. All for the good of it's users. They have been active all the time better trying to understand their users and implem, ent such things as are relevent.

Here's a link the their new Data Center Page

When I take my meds I'm manic when I don't I'm severly depressed like I am now. I see planes crashing into buildings in my dreams and I wake up in cold sweats. I can't go on anymore. I just hung myself"

The note sparked a series of panicked messages from his Facebook friends:

Facebook launches a Global Disaaster Relief Page. Help Haiti

Facebook has launched a page called Global Disaster Relief . The first task seems to be to mobilize support for the victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti. This page will help in the Haiti disaster and any other disasters that may occur in the future. 1000's of Dollars have already been raised through Facebook causes. So with the launching of this page Facebook will have one point of contact where users can come to to be a part of their global relief efforts.

Facebook is serious about promoting this page. The social site as in the spirit of it's creators believe that a one stop shop will be good. Where people can come to find info and also help. It could become a globally coordinated effort. As of this time of writing this there are already 43, 036 fans of the page. Posted below we have a video found on the page of former president Bill Clinton and how we can all help haiti.

"The Global Disaster Relief on Facebook page will spotlight efforts on Facebook to help respond to disasters around the globe."

There are three URl's to reach their page

http://www.facebook.com/disasterrelief
http://www.facebook.com/globalrelief
http://www.facebook.com/helpinghaiti

And this was found as their mission.

The devastating earthquake in Haiti has underscored the Internet's critical role in connecting the world's population in times of tragedy. In response to this, Facebook has launched the Disaster Relief on Facebook Page where the more than 350 million people on Facebook can educate themselves and find out how to help not only in Haiti but wherever disaster and misfortune may strike.

Moments after the ground shook in Port-au-Prince, people around the world immediately sought to help with relief efforts and express their solidarity with those in need. Every minute, people have been posting more than 1,500 status updates on Facebook that contained the word "Haiti." People have contributed thousands of dollars through the Causes application on Facebook, and groups including the American Red Cross, Oxfam America and Partners in Health have mobilized supporters through their Facebook Pages and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in the last 24 hours alone.

We want Disaster Relief on Facebook to serve as a collaborative resource for individuals, non-profits, governments and industry to raise awareness for those in need around the world. We're inviting relief organizations to be part of this effort so they can further highlight the needs in Haiti and during times of future crises. Most importantly, we hope all of you will join us by becoming a fan of Disaster Relief on Facebook and by continuing to support relief efforts along with your friends.

By staying connecting, we can all make a difference no matter where we are in the world.

* * * *
Users should be aware that in times of tragedy, individuals with criminal intent may solicit contributions purportedly for a charitable organization and/or a good cause. Be skeptical of any unsolicited appeals you receive or find on the Internet. For more info, visit: www.fbi.gov/cyberinvest/escams.htm

Teen gets grounded, starts Facebook group to get ungrounded, group membes tell her to stay grounded will do you good.

The Facebook group "1000 to get tess ungrounded" has now crossed the 1000 mark. The story so far. A teen goes out to a party gets drunk and misses her 11:30 deadline by an hour. Get's punished by her parents and is grounded for 5 weeks. Tess Chapman a starts a Facebook group to help her get ungrounded.

This is what she had to say on her group homepage

Description:

so basically i was grounded for 5 weeks for a MISTAKE that i didnt fully know the outcome of. my parents flipped sh** and grounded me for 5 WEEKS. thats my childhood right there. please join so i can convice them to unground me. please please please. you guys all know what its like to be a teenager with (sometimes) difficult parents, so lets ban together as teenagers and proove something to my parents, there are actin a fool.

The surprising thing is that most people on the group agree that the punishment is good and she needs to go through it. Many are also surprised that she has access to a pc, internet and laptop. Talk about being grounded electronic style

So now everybody wants to know the magic answer. The group has crossed 1000 and as of writing this the number stands at 1,112. But think about it, her parents must be concerned over her future and now some popularity thing over Facebook. We think the answer will be no and the punishment will stand.

Facebook take down Defriended iPhone App for tracking friends who remove you

Most Social Netoworking sites will let you know when you have a friend request but few will let you know when you have been unfriended. If we can use that word. Being Defriended is one thing most users like to find out about. Unfortunately on Facebook if you want to know who has defriended you you need to browse through your list of friends and find the missing person.

An iPhone App launched about a week ago was able to do just that. Let you know when you've been defriended and by whome. The App Called Defriended created by  i-Doodz has unfortunalty been blocked by Facebook. As it violates Facebook's Developers platform policies which states " you must not notify a user that someone has removed the user as a friend." In other words, Facebook doesn't want you to know who doesn't want to be your friend ".

Today, a message on the i-Doodz site states:

Last week our developer was bored one evening, had an idea, and a few hours later uploaded the "defriended" iPhone app. it unexpectedly got a lot of attention, then subsequently Facebook blocked the app, causing it to stop working. We will be looking at how feasible it is to make the app work without a corresponding facebook app, but in the meantime if you've bought the app you should ask apple for a refund - and please do...we don't really want to get money for an app you paid for and that doesn't work. We apologise for the inconvenience.

If you really want to know which of your friends have removed you as a friend, you are better off using the Facebook friend checker greasemonkey script which Facebook can't block. Any service which attempts to use Facebook's API for the purpose of notifying users about those friends who've defriended them are typically banned. Yes, being unfriended is extremely commonplace.

Facebook users try to Save the Woodland Park Nocturnal House

The nocturnal house of the woodland park zoo has announced that it is going to close due to budget constraints.

Zoo President and CEO Deborah Jensen said the zoo had to make tough financial decisions to cut $800,000. It plans to lay off 12 employees and close the Nocturnal House. The exhibit was one of the biggest energy users at the zoo and the animals will be easy to move when the exhibit closes. Some of the animals will remain at the zoo, and some will go to other zoos.

Closing the exhibit will save the zoo $300,000, said zoo officials. The zoo's operating budget is $30 million a year."It was a very hard decision to make," Jensen said. "None of us are happy about it."

Scot Gifford launched a Facebook group to help the Zoo change it's mind.

"It's not closed 'til it's closed," said Gifford, who hopes his organized effort will prompt the zoo to change its mind.

Below is description found on his group. As of writing this article there are already over 14,000 members. All the best Scot

The Zoo is planning on shutting down the Nocturnal House and that is not good. It is by far the best exhibit at the zoo and is pretty unique. While times are tough, we need to not lose the things that make the Zoo so great. For many this is their only chance to actually see the wonderful creatures that inhabit the nighttime world. What better way to turn fear into fascination and apathy to respect then to show creatures, many of whom live right under our noses, in a great approximation of their natural habitat doing what they do.

Please join this group and show support for finding alternatives to closing down this important and fascinating exhibit.

You could also make a donation to the zoo and state that it is for saving the Nocturnal House. A monthly one even that you will stop if they do shut it down. Show them that we not only love the Nocturnal House, but are willing to step up and help with the cost of maintaining it.

Please also contact the Zoo and let them know how much the Nocturnal House means to you. Tell the person who sells you tickets, tell the staff, send an email, make a phone call, send them a letter, anything that lets them know that this is a big part of why you love and visit the zoo.

Save the vampire bats!!!

Facebook founder says privacy no longer a Social Norm

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg speaking at the crunchie awards in San Francisco this weekend said that online privacy is no longer the 'social norm'. With more and more people getting connected online and sharing information it is no longer something to be worried about. With the rise of blogs and other social mediums people are sharing all kinds of things. A lot of the information being shared is also quiet personal.

Reflecting the state of the companies privacy outlook. Their recent change sparked a lot of angry protests online. But we did not see people leaving the site in their 1,000. It looks like everyone stayed and got on with things. These changes initiated on Facebook reflect the social norms as it is today and as Facebook see it.

"People have really gotten comfortable not only sharing more information and different kinds, but more openly and with more people," he said. "That social norm is just something that has evolved over time."

Zuckerberg said that the rise of social media reflected changing attitudes among ordinary people, adding that this radical change has happened in just a few years.
