Closeup of Orion capsule being recovered following EFT-1 -- America's newest spacecraft

The Orion Spacecraft is the vehicle America hopes to use to get people exploring the Moon, Asteroids and Mars. The Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) is a spacecraft intended to carry a crew of up to four astronauts to destinations beyond-low Earth orbit, being built and now being tested by NASA. NASA marked a major milestone Friday on its journey to Mars as the Orion spacecraft completed its first voyage to space, traveling farther than any spacecraft designed for astronauts has been in more than 40 years. Orion will open the space between Earth and Mars for exploration by astronauts. This proving ground will be invaluable for testing capabilities future human Mars missions will need. [Image source here and read more here and bonus FB pics here]

Timelapse of the Milky Way over Colorado

Please click on image for an expanded view. It is not normal for city dwellers to see the stars in heavens as it's meant to be and really is. This might be because of the infusion of city lights that have destroyed the night sky. All if takes is to go to a remote place with little or no lights -- the kind we are used to and enjoy the celestial beauty that is ours to see. The shooting stars really add the magic. [Image Source

Interstellar Fans, here's some High Quality Wormhole wallpapers for you

Please click on image to expand. The opening sequence of the script features the collision of a neutron star and a black hole which creates an energy burst that ends up detected by LIGO receivers, this is the first discovery of the wormhole. Twin black holes found near the Ice Planet and near the wormhole. The names of the two black holes most likely come from, The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel, a pentology of novels written in the 16th century by Francois Rabelais, featuring the adventures of two giants: Gargantua and his son Pantagruel. So, we just landed on a comet

This is a first for mankind again, landing on a comet. Rosetta is a robotic space probe built and launched by the European Space Agency. The spacecraft consists of two main elements. the Rosetta space probe orbiter and the Philae robotic lander. The Philae robotic lander has landed on the comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenkoand has been confirmed by the agency. They have however stated that there might be a minor glitch as the harpoons launched by it might have failed to anchor it to the surface. The pic above is of the lander as it was nearing the surface of the comet and for the time-being no more photos will be sent back -- as the craft needs to do some manuring and settle itself on the comet and all communication has been severed. Here's a video of something small from space entering earth's atmosphere

Meteor explosion Milky Way Timelapse from wes eisenhauer on Vimeo.

Redditor wes_eisenhaur was shooting a time-lapse of the milky way, when all of a sudden there is something small that enters earth's atmosphere and then appears to disintegrate into nothing. Other users came to conclusions on what it might have been. Here's a quick breakdown of the suggestions. it could have been a bolide -- which does not have any specific definition but loosely translated means fireball. Another suggestion is that it is a large meteor -- bigger than a typical grain of sand but too small to make it to earth. So it enters out atmosphere, heats up and then pops. Another suggestion is that it might be a bit of space junk, like a part from a rocket or something of that sort. Either way it came form space. So if you are into astronomy and like to gaze at the stars. get your self nice camera and you too could get a nice video of objects falling from space. [Source]

Sarychev Volcano eruption viewed from space [Gif + Video]

This GIF is from a video released by NASA of the Sarychev volcano, northeast of Japan, during its early stages of eruption.  You can watch as the plume of smoke and ash rises and you can only imagine the shock-wave it would have generated. Here's a link to the NASA article on the same. [Gif source here] Please video the video of the same eruption below.

Not just Earth but entire Solar System Crowded

And you though we live on an overpopulated planet. Turns out the entire Solar System's crowded and there's not enough space for another planet. If another orb gets thrown into the mix, the whole system will get out of whack. With collisions and not enough place to roam. This according to astronomers Julia Fang and Jean-Luc Margot at UCLA. Who after extensive simulations of faraway star systems have concluded there is no more room for another planet.
Solar System is over crowdedIn out own galaxy only 8 balls have survived. This after countless collisions and migrations. They have settled into their own orbits and in their time make their way around their established system. Everything is settled and each planet has its set course. Another planet will create unnecessary confusion and other plants in that galaxy will need to adjust, which would result in all hell breaking loose. The earth is in motion and all is well as it orbits its own star - just as all the other planets in the universe.

Astronaut Chris Hadfield Sings From Space - Space Oddity

Astronaut Chris Hadfield has done it again and this time has moved people to tears. A day before he returns to earth he posts a video on YouTube with him singing David Bowie's Space Oddity. David Bowie has heard it and has also like it. Chris Hadfield posted the song to Reddit under the videos section later and the comments just started rolling. With many a young users' interest in space and science being sparked again and older users being moved to tears. One user also commented on how this must be the most expensive music video ever produced.

Here's the tweet from Astronaut Chris Hadfield on the new song

Physics teacher does a Google Glass hangout at the large hadron collider [Video]

So here's the story about the video you see below. One thing I saw being debated on CNN yesterday was the application of Google Glass. Throughout the discussion one thing was very clear - Google Glass would be good for teaching and that's exactly what one physics professor did. Andrew Vanden Heuvel who teaches physics online especially for schools that don't offer advanced physics courses. Did something really cool. He got a chance to experiment with Google Glass and wore it on a field trip to CERN in Switzerland. CERN is the place to go to if you want to look back to the very beginning of the universe.

physics teacher takes google glass to CERNCERN is also the birthplace of the World Wide Web WWW - yeah, the internet. In the video you get to see the large hadron collider. Andrew also gets on a cycle adn takes a ride down the 27 km tunnel, which his brothers students get to watch the whole thing. This is a pretty amazing video and thanks to Google Glass - these kind of techie things are possible. Andrew also has a blog called 'Teaching with Google Glass', which you can follow to check out his Google Glass Classes.

Is Russel Crowe's UFO Real

Russel Crowe is in the news again, this time not for a movie he has starred in or something the actor did. This time it's totally different; the actor shared a UFO video via his Twitter account, which soon went viral. The video taken from his office shows three red UFOs moving around Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens. This is about half a mile away form his office and was taken using a telephoto lens. The rumors doing the rounds on the internet is that this video was posted just a few hours after Russel was complaining on Twitter that his new flick ( Broken City) was being under-promoted. His rep has confirmed that the footage was filmed 4 years ago by Russel's friend acclaimed cinematographer Duane Manwiller.

Is the Russel Crowe UFO RealSo is it real? did the actor and his friend film a real UFO is was it something else. YouTube user has a fantastic explanation for what happened here and we definitely have a winner. Apparently it was a sailboat and the video below explains it in greater detail. Russel Crow just got burned. The video that could have rattled all of science.

Is it true that Elephants are scared of Bees and Mice and the Bee Rumble

For this post we take a break from the usual Tech writing and do something related to mother earth. Another reason for this posts' inspiration is the constant updates on Reddit in regard to the fact that Elephants are actually scared of Bees. For a long time there has always been an urban legend that 'Elephants are scared of mice'. To debunk this the Myth-busters team over at Discovery actually went to Africa fully prepared to prove it was wrong and just an urban legend. Hiding mice under elephant dung the researches waited, and much to their surprise when elephants discovered the rodents. it stopped them dead in their tracks and even made them turn around. It is actually true elephants are scared of mice. Please don't ask us why.

elephants are scared of the bee rumbleAre elephants scared of Bees?, yes, they are deathly scared of bees. There is even something know as the 'Bee Rumble'. When the sound of a swarm of bees was played close to elephant families. The reaction was instant - the elephants left the place immediately. The reasons' for this is that even though elephants have thick skin there are parts of them that are fragile and soft. A bees sting could cause a lot of pain. Like behind their ears, belly and inside their trunk. Elephants must have some special sound for when they hear bees - Bee Rumble. African bees are also much more aggressive and have a deadlier sting - according to Sciencemag. Research has been conducted only on African elephants. Not sure if the same goes for Asian elephants. Watch the video below of an elephant heard reacting to the Bee Rumble.
