How to stop Twitter from tracking you online

Twitter has a new feature out called 'Who to follow' basically helping you find people who you might want to follow on Twitter. This feature has been announced on a blog post and we have written about it as well. It is a very simple update and it works like this. The feature will track your movements all across the web and based on websites you visit. Suggested users will appear on your 'Who to follow' timeline. These websites and blogs must of-course have a Twitter button or a widget. These buttons and widgets can in turn send back information to Twitter and they are able to track which websites or blogs are receiving the most tweets or follows. This information is then passed down to Twitter users allowing them to find great Twitter accounts to follow. Read more about it in our previous post. if you would like to stop Twitter from following you this is what you need to do.

How to stop turn-ff or disable Twitter from tracking me
1. login to twitter
2. Click on down-arrow beside the human face icon.
3. Choose settings
4. Beside personalization uncheck the box before 'Tailor Twitter based on my recent website visits'
5. You're done
If you are logged-in to Twitter click here to go to your settings page.

This will stop Twitter from tracing and tracking you across the Twitter ecosystem.

Twitter: Who to follow

Twitter has another interesting innovation that they have launched. It is called 'Who to follow', this feature will have a specific page and can be used by new users who signup for the service as well as for seasoned users. Twitter's 'Who to follow' will be based on a couple of algorithms like geographic location of the user. Websites the user or his friends visit in the Twitter ecosystem.  as well as websites on the internet that have Twitter buttons or widgets. Information from these buttons can be used to determine which buttons and widgets are getting tweeted and followed a lot. These accounts that have been gaining a large number of followers in the last 10 days can be used as a suggested person or account to follow.

Another smart move by Twitter is the offering of 'Do not track'. With do not track turned off - you can be assured that Twitter will not be following your activity and everything gets turned off. This is one of the privacy options to be kept in mind if you do not want Twitter keeping a track of all your actions in the Twitter ecosystem

Please find below a basic Q&A to help you along

Thanks for the offer but I do not want Twitter to tailor Twitter to my interests.
You can go here to turn the feature off.

What kind of information does tailor Twitter to my interests store.
Tailor Twitter to my interests stores information about websites that you visit on the web. Not all sites but sites that have either a Twitter button or a Twitter Widget

Is there any other way to turn on Tailor Twitter based on my recent website visits
You can login to Twitter and then access your account settings page or simple click here. Once logged in you can then check or uncheck the box beside personalization which says 'Tailor Twitter based on my recent website visits'. and you're done.

Is there a preview page to find suggestions made for me
You can view the preview page here and check out all the suggestions made out for you by Twitter.

How will the suggested user list appear on Twitter.
if you decide to use the feature then you will see a list of suggested users on the left-hand column and a Timeline of tweets from those users. Please refer image in this post for a snapshot of the new suggested users to follow Timeline.

These options are available to help you look after your privacy settings on Twitter. This is something that you might want to look into and choose privacy options that best suit you.

Twitter to send A weekly digest of Stories & Tweets from my network

Twitter made an announcement on May 14, 2012 to let all users know that a weekly digest will be sent out - this digest will contain a weekly gist of all popular activity of folks connected to you. So this email will have all the popular stories of people who you are following. Twitter also says that this mail will contain all the most relevant stories and tweets from people connected to you. These stories will not come to you looking like a standard mail. They have a format similar to Discover tab.

So once you get an email and open it. All stories will be in the format of the Discover tab. Which means- beneath summaries you will find who shared each story, helping you decide which stories you might actually be interested in. Clicking on any headline will help you read the entire story and see related Tweets. You can then add your own Tweet and send the tweet directly from your email. The stories you see will be from the stories your followers were most engaged in even if you don't follow the originator of the story, i.e the user from who the tweet originated from. You can also see who from your network either Retweeted or Favorited tweets and you can do the same.

Thanks, but I would rather now receive this email.
You can go to your settings and email preference and choose not to receive this email by clicking here. Once in your notification settings you can then uncheck the box beside - A weekly digest of Stories & Tweets from my network.

The upside about this email is that if you have been busy and have not been able to catch up with your Tweeps. This weekly digest will help you do just that. It is also a nice way to see who among your contacts has been most social engaged on Twitter and also what stories your group of people have been most interested in during the week. It will help you stay on top of things if this is something you are interested in doing. Please let us know what you think about this new feature in the comments section below.

How to find curated tweets and follow those big Twitter Monents #OnlyOnTwitter

Another Twitter Moment that is being curated

Twitter has those incredibly big moments, when one single Tweet started a whole movement, when one Tweet broke news of a big events first on Twitter, when bloggers who got arrested quickly spread the word with a single Tweet. This is know as the power of 140. There are literally hundreds of events that take place on Twitter that are memorable and in fact there are so many that it's difficult to simply keep up. With Twitter moments you can always go back and find all the excitement curated and kept safe for you to live through again. Like the Arsenal Twitter Takeover - When the UK football club Arsenal F.C invited some of its players to take over their main Twitter account for a live Q@A with fans. You can still find all the associated Twitter by following the hashtag #ArsenalLive. The other way would be to follow the curated topic and and view all the Tweets with pics and videos that were posted found here. You can also go back and find all the important Tweets associated with the 2012 Academy Awards found here

Twitter is endless and vast and this new initiative by Twitter Moments will help curate and keep safe all the important Tweets associated with people who brought news and innovation to Twitter. Like when Eminem interview Yelawolf live on Twitter. This happened after Yelawolf  released the album Radioactive on Shady Records, incorporating the hashtag #radioactive. There are numerous instances of innovation on Twitter by artists, politicians, musicians and celebrities. You can now find all the curated Tweets with Twitter Moments. You can use the hashtag #OnlyOnTwitter to talk about it with other users.

Twitter to withhold Tweets if requested by a country

Twitter has given itself flexibility to withhold and censor Tweets if requested by a particular country. The micro-blogging service made this announcement as they expand into many more countries. Twitter is becoming important and more and more governments are wanting to have a say in the micro-blogging service. There are also country specific rules that might apply to the service in various countries. Which means they will need to comply. Till now if a Tweet had to be removed it was done globally. Now Twitter will withhold the that Tweet within a geographical area and it will still be available elsewhere in the world. This is good as it would still be legal in other countries. This flexibility is a good thing and ensure that tweets don't disappear globally. Which also means for those who are Techie, a workaround is always possible. Good for Twitter for coming up with something so brilliant. There are also others who are criticizing this move by Twitter saying that it is loosing its will to ensure Free Speech on the service. What Twitter has done for sure seems a better alternative than fighting with governments around the world. At least the Tweet is still available but just not in some countries.

India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh joins Twitter

Source: Twitter

Amid all the scares happening in India with ministers threatening popular social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Google with legal actions if they do not censor content that could hurt religious sentiments. The Prime Minister of India has joined Twitter. The reason given by his office being that he wants to reach out to younger people and especially the online generation. The work done by him and his office has been substantial and he would like to use Twitter to bring it to the notice of young Indians. The first three Tweets from his office has to be with the 'National Bravery Awards' and a picture of him sitting with the young bravehearts. The Prime Minister has been known to keep his silence on many a burning issue but we hope he will be able to open up more using the micro-blogging's 140 characters at a time.

The Prime Minister's Twitter handle is @PMO which stands for prime minister's office. Indians on Twitter however have not lost an opportunity to poke fun at the account, saying it will mostly stay silent and 140 characters is too much. Others see this as a step forward and the PM now has over 8 thousand Twitter followers. You can expect this to grow over the coming days as more and more people are just finding out about it. Way to go Mr.PM.

Don't Be Evil Bookmarklet: How does it work

When Google launched 'Search Plus Your world' (SPYW), users were told that this new feature will help them get better results when they search Google. There were other things that users were not told, results from Twitter, Facebook and many other sites were being omitted. The reason Google gave was that Twitter and Facebook did not allow the search engine access to information, as much as it needed to. You therefore get a whole lot of Google+ profiles in your search. Most of these profiles are not even updated regularly and the same person's Twitter profile would actually be much relevant, but Google choose to ignore it. They would like to have people forcefully sign-up for a Google+ Profile.

Don't be evil: Is the philosophy Google built their business on. Show results keeping the user in mind and not the company. So no one results gets precedence over the other. With SPYW this does not seem to apply at all.

A few engineers from Facebook, Twitter and MySpace have decided to fight back and prove to everyone that Google can sometimes be evil and manipulate search results. The result -  a Bookmarklet that can be used on Chrome, Firefox and Safari. It does not work on Internet explorer.

How to get the Don't be evil bookmarklet, add-on or extension now and try a more relevant Google search.
1. Head over to their site focusontheuser.org

2. Click on Try a more relevant Google

3. Click and drag 'Don't be evil' to your bookmark bar. If it is not visible change your settings to make it visible and then drag and drop.

4. Now go to Google and search for anything
5. when you get the results click on 'Don't be evil' bookmarklet located in your bookmark bar

You can also get the Chrome App (Extensions) for the same in the Google Chrome Store and add the App. What the app does is it Modifies Google's hardcoded Google+ search results and replaces them with real social media results.

TwitWipe to delete all your Tweets in one go

So maybe you had a bad start on Twitter and would like to stat all over again. This happens to many people who start using Twitter without knowing Twitter etiquette and commit a few mistakes. Some Tweets would have been better kept without being Tweeted. Anyways if you are one of those people who has started on the wrong foot, there is a solution for you, clear all your Tweets and start afresh. TwitWipe will do all this for you without deleting any of your followers. There are two reasons why this web app might be useful, you are either handing over the account to someone else. Maybe even lucky enough to sell your Twitter handle. The other is that you have committed some unpardonable Twitter sins and need to be Twitter born again, again.

TwitWipe: How does it work
You can delete all your Tweets with a single click but it is going to take some time. The builders of the app say that it is so popular right now it is going to take some time. It does not wipe out your favorites, followers and people you are following. So you get to keep everything but just get ride of your Tweets.  To get started all you need to do is to sign-in with your - you guessed it - Twitter account, authorize the app and you're good to go. Please leave a comment with what you think.

So what's new with the new version of Twitter

image: Twitter

fly.twitter.com has a preview of the new Twitter and this is going to take some getting used to. For those of you who are too used to the old Twitter design this is going to be something new. The whole interface that you have gotten so used to, is all set to change. The new Twitter has been divided into 5 parts and each has it's own unique way of making Twitter faster and even more simpler.

Home
This is your welcome screen and first thing you notice is that the right-hand menu has been shifted to the left. So you can now see stats, who to follow and worldwide trends on the left hand side of your screen. There is still the same Twitter timeline available but with a small difference. Clicking on a Tweet will enlarge the same and if there is video or a image embedded. It can be viewed right there. Everything in Home will be consistent across devices and the web. The same screen will be available on the iPhones and Android phones. The Home tab is available on the top left-hand corner of your screen.

@
This is the next tab on your home-screen and clicking on it will let you start our conversations with other users. So whenever you want to fond someone on Twitter using @username. You will need to do so in this section. You can also view your @mentions, retweets and Favorited Tweets here. This is also the place where you can find people who have added you to a list.

#
Now this is the new Twitter with something that has never been seen before. With the Discover section of Twitter you can check out Hashtags, discover content based on your geo-location. Get served with stories that are of interest you. The best part is that the new discover will start bringing topics to you based on your interests and clicking habits on Twitter. Twitter calls this 'made for you'.

Me
The 'Me' tab let's you show your profile to the world. People can learn more about you over here and also see which lists you are a part of and other information regarding your profile and participation on Twitter.

Speak Up
This is the new Tweet button which let's you share Tweets, photos, videos and more.

You can now download the latest version of Twitter for Android here and iPhone here

Twitter: Why do strangers follow me?

Was doing a little bit of research to determine some basic questions that people have about Twitter. If you are not a Twitter newbie then you already know the answer to this question. If however you are just getting started of and would like to know the answer to this question. This post is for you.

Why do strangers follow me on Twitter?
Twitter when it was first created and launched was a network for people, mostly friends to keep track of each other. It was fun and easy and limited to 140 characters only. Enabling people who knew each other to keep in touch and keep stay updated with what their close pals were up to.

When you login to Twitter now you always have the question ' What's Happening?' that was not always the case. The question used to be 'What are you doing?'. Implying the need to keep your friends updated with what you're up to.

All this was before Twitter hit the world-stage and grew to be the micro-blogging service that it is today. Since it is an open network that means you do not need to be friends with a particular individual to follow that person. So when you Tweet and other people find it interesting they might want to follow you. By following you they will be able to keep track of interesting tweets from you. Twitter is built on an open platform meaning most of what is on the site is visible to everyone. There are people who have 'Protested Accounts' which mean only people they allow to follow will be able to read their tweets.

We cannot define Twitter and put it into any one corner. It is open to everyone and as long as you do not protect you account you tweets are visible to everyone. Those who find something good about your tweets might want to follow you. This is something that is flattering and you can look at these people as your fans and come up with interesting tweets for them. Hope this answers the questions and if you would like to continue the discussion please use the comment section below this post.

How to disable or turn off Retweets from a particular user on Twitter

Image: Twitter

This post will be a guide on how to turn off or disable retweets from a particular user or follower of yours on Twitter. You might be wondering why you would want to do this. You know how it is when you follow some users and all they ever do is retweet other people's Tweets. This can get quiet monotonous and irritating and you know original Tweets are not going to come from that account and the only thing you will see are Retweets. Fortunately Twitter has the option that allows you to go to that particular account and turn of all Retweets from them. This way your Timeline on Twitter will be free from Retweets from them.

How to disable Retweets on Twitter
1. Login to Twitter
2. Click on the full profile of the person whose Retweets you want to block.
3. You will find a green Retweet icon below their profile picture
4. If you click on it once it turns to grey. ONce it turns to Grey you will no more see Retweets from this person. If you change you mind again and decide that you would like to see this person's Retweet activity. Go back to their full profile and change the button back to green by clicking on it.
5. You're Done

How to change your Twitter Username (Handle)

This is very important for businesses, if you are already a Twitter user and you now want to re-brand yourself or your organization. You will need to change your twitter username. When this is done you will need to let all your followers know with a Tweet that you have changed your Twitter username or handle as some users like to call it.

Something to consider before changing your Twitter Handle. Twitter will let you change your handle very easily and you can do so in 2 easy steps. The only problem is that even though Twitter will update your info immediately  search engines will not. So people who are searching for you via search engines will be directed to a 404 page - page not found. This is something you might want to consider before making the move. if you are not worried about it you can go ahead and change your Twitter handle. If you are concerned then you would like to do this. Change your Twitter handle and then immediately login again and reserve your old username. You can use the same Email ID to create another Twitter account. So use your old handle to tell people who find you through search engines that this account has moved and leave your new Twitter ID for them to find. If you find someone else is already using your desired Twitter handle, this is what you need to do.

How to change your Twitter Handle or Username

1. Login to Twitter

2. Click on the drop-down arrow next to your username

3. Click on settings

4. Beside Username fil in your new username or Twitter Handle

5. You're done

Please leave a comment below with what you think and your feedback.

Salam Rushdie inspires the TT #MiddleNameUsers

Image: Salman Rushdie Twitter

Salman Rushdie has inspired the hashtag #MiddleNameUsers. The story on how this came about goes like this. Facebook deleted the world-famous author's account over the weekend. Reason cited was this - the author was not using his real name. His birth name is Ahmed Salman Rushdie but as the whole world knows he goes by the name of Salman Rushdie. Facebook has a name policy and you can not allowed to use your middle name. The author took to Twitter to voice his discontent and Facebook eventually relented. They had to as there was no other choice because in real life Salman Rushdie is know as Salman Rushdie. Since the Ahmed has been dropped. We have previously covered the Facebook Name policy and you can read about it here.

Now this has prompted a popular hashtag on Twitter #MiddleNameUsers since many famous people no not go by their first name but by their middle name. It is up to an individual to go by the name that best suits them and what they are known by their friends and family is most important.

Salman Rushdie himself has started compiling a list of Middle Name users and the count has come to 4 as of writing this post. Here is a full list of the names.

ARTHUR EVELYN ST.JOHN WAUGH WILLIAM BRAD(LEY) PITT GEORGE ORSON WELLES MICHAEL TRENT REZNOR JAMES RICK PERRY. JAMES PAUL MCCARTNEY HENRY CHARLES BUKOWSKI CHARLES BRUCE CHATWIN LYNN NOLAN RYAN ADELINE VIRGINIA WOOLF. 11.11.11 Twitter Videos does not get good response

Usually video released by Twitter's in-house team get amazing reviews on YouTube and other sites. This one video is not going this way and the comments that are getting the most thumbs ups are the once that are quiet negative. Once of the reasons could be that the graphics in the video and not rally awe inspiring and kind of boring. The video although over a day old has still not crossed even 15,000 views. So there is no chance that it is going to go viral. The videos shows the outpouring of Tweets on 11.11.11 as they happened. It shows you how people were tweeting across the globe on that day. The visualization is cool but does not have that one factor to make you go wow. Maybe another reason for it is that 11.11.11 also fell on Veteran's day and people were more interested in the auspiciousness of that day rather than in anything else. hey they are not to be blamed anyways. Check out the video below and please let us know what you think about the whole thing.

Twitter: What does MT mean

If you are a Twitter user then you must have seen people using 'MT' before their tweets and it is not a rule you can use MT anywhere in your tweet. If you wondering what 'MT' means it simply stands for 'Modified Tweet'. Meaning the user is Retweeting a tweet and has added his or her own modification to the Tweet.

Why would someone modify a tweet

The main reason is because of cross-posting. When someone sees a good tweet and would like to share it with their own followers, it usually could do with some modifications depending on the people it is being tweeted to.

It is also a good thing because if you are using MT then you would also be acknowledging the original poster  with a link to the original post. Of course there are no hard and fast rules, but acknowledging it is a modified tweet is the first step to give credit where it is due.

Sometimes the original poster might share a link with a title that deserves better. This is one of the major times people use MT.

Maybe you are a content curator and would like to modify tweets and add your own dimension and flavor to it.

Please drop a comment with what you think about it
