Twitter users spead DUI chekpoint locations

Police fear that young drivers will avoid DUI checkpoints as word about their locations spread. All thanks to Twitter. Drivers can upload locations and other will navigate away from these points. Sobriety tests points

In Fresno, Calif., police say they know their checkpoints are being avoided by young drivers sending tweets. Sgt. Dave Gibeault, head of the traffic unit, tells McClatchy Newspapers his own daughter has sent him text messages about where she's heard there is a checkpoint.

Police in Phoenix agree saying it is not just Twitter that is being used but Facebook and iPhone apps as well. Is it any wonder that there would be an iPhone app for this as well.

The police themselves give out notice to the public about the DUI checkpoints except specific locations. With people now broadcasting on social sites and smartphones it now makes the situation a little tricky as the police know people are going to go out of their way to avoid they checkpoints and that should not cause any grievance to other motorists.

US Virtual Econmy is booming

With the boom in online gamers virtual currency is a market that is all set to boom. Gone are the days that 'Gamers' were connoted as a teen sitting in front of his console and playing for hours together. Today the average age of a gamer is 30 and these people have money to say. They are able to spend on virtual goods. Goods that do not really exist. Popular games on Facebook like Farmville and Mafia Wars sell goods to gamers in exchange for real hard cash.

Woman it appears are more heavy gamers than men and also try to hide this fact. They play it more to be in touch with family and friends. Social gaming is set to be the big thing in 2010. The BBC reported that the Virtual Gaming market in the US market would be $5 Billion over the next 5 years.

Latest news and video on the Google Phone 'Nexus One'.

With all the rumors flying across thew internet. We now have websites also telling us the price of Google's Phone called Nexus One. Both Gizmodo and Engadget posted leaked documents which showed the price of the Nexus One to be $529.99 unlocked and $179.99 with a two year T-Mobile contract.

Google had earlier sent out invitations for a Android press conference. After which people started speculating about the new phone and it most probably is going to happen.

We just need to wait and see. As far as the pricing goes by comparative analysis it is quiet competitive. On Jan 5th we should have a lot of confirmations and its features should be in full glow. The phone has however garnered a lot of public interest as is with the launch of any big tech gadget. With the start of the new decade many possible surprises would emerge from companies involved in SmartPhones.

Here's a video of the phone found on YouTube

Apple wins lawsuit in hearing-loss lawsuit

Two buyers of the iPod filed a case in 2006 claiming that the sound of the iPod can reach a maximum of 115 decibels enough they say to cause permanent hearing loss. The device's ear buds provide less protection that traditional head phones the suit alleged and the volume switch failed to notify users of dangerous levels. The plaintiff's also claimed that the manufacturers warning which cautions users was inadequate and not enough. The suit also alleged that consumers overpaid for the device.

In the ruling the judge wrote that the plaintiff's did not offer any proof that they hearing has been damaged or that iPod's ear buds are dangerous but only pointed that they could be made safer.

So for now Apple is out of the court getting ready for the next set of allegations, they always come.

Facebook was the No.1 US site this Xmas

Facebook with its 350 million members pushed the site to be the most visited site this Christmas beating Google for the No 1 spot in the US.

Traffic tracker Hitwise says that

Facebook was the most visited site in the US on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. 1st time the site has been the #1 visited US site ever.

To tap that market and prove itself to large brands, Facebook needs to prove traffic and engagement. Facebook has more than doubled in size this year, surpassing 350 million users. Hitwise reported two weeks ago that Facebook was the third most visited site this year,up from ninth place in 2008. Some of Facebook’s own statistics are even scarier: the average user spends 55 minutes a day on the site.

Even with all the controversies surrounding it's privacy policy there does not seem to be people moving away in 10 and 1000's . So is it a wild guess to know which site is going to be the most visited on New Year's EVE.

Nokia claims Apple are copiers

The Spat between Nokia and Apple has just moved to a new level the International Trade Commission (ITC) in the US.

Nokia has said that Apple infringes virtually in all its patents with respect to Mobile phones, Portable music players and computer sold. Nokia is now asking the ITC to do something about it. Nokia has sued Apple in October over 10 patents the said the company had infringed upon. Apple in reply counter sued them over 13 patent infringements and also anti-competitive charges.

If Nokia prevails it could be a real dampener for Apple as the US ITC could ask them to stop importing their toys from China. Where all Apple products these days are made.

Normally what happens in cases like these is that both companies would come to a compromise and allow each other to use the other's patents to a large extent.

Nokia is going ahead with it's complaint even after bing counter sued by Apple saying that the counter suit did not change anything fundamental in it's own course.

Iranian protestors using Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

Iranian protesters use Twitter, Facebook and YouTube to spread live updates. On Sunday when the second wave of protesters hit the streets. Photos and videos of live updates were uploaded to social networking sites and the updates kept coming. Taking citizen journalism to a whole new level. With western and world news bureaus unable to operate out of Tehran. The onus fell on it's own citizens to keep the world updated on what's going on.

The associated pres also mentioned that cell phone use and text messages services were restricted within Iran.

Images posted on Twitter and Facebook or other sites have had to be blurred to protect people from the government who would crack down on them. Bloggers have also taken up the task of spreading news about the conflict.

Kim Kardashian gets paid $10,000 a Tweet

Kim Kardashian is the highest-paid celebrity Twitter user in the world, according to a recent survey.
The reality TV star is believed to earn around $10,000 (£6,250) per post on the micro-blogging service.
Kardashian was named top of a poll compiled by Ad.ly, an online service that allows celebrities and public figures the chance to "monetise" their tweets.
The 29-year-old socialite arranges endorsement deals through the company, which she then posts on to her 2.7 million followers.
She told Us Weekly: "I tweet about products, places, foods and fashion that I love."
Other celebrities currently using the online marketing service include Soulja Boy and Audrina Patridge.

It has been revealed that Kim Kardashian gets paid $10,000 a tweet by Twitter advertisers, who use her account to promote their products to her over two million followers. Many are now asking if she is worth it.
On Kim Kardashian's Twitter account, in tweets such as the one below:
http://twitpic.com/ulofd - Heading 2 the gym! Got my @Reebok EasyTones on! LOVE THESE! Go get 'em at @Dickssportcmo
Kim Kardashian promotes products and where other people can buy them.
She reportedly has a contract with Ad.ly, an online advertising company, and they have a few other clients as well, such as Lauren Conrad and Dr. Drew. But Kim is their highest earner and most popular.
Kim Kardashian does not get paid for every tweet, but for every tweet promoting a product she does.
It is thought some of Kardashian's advertisers include Reebok EasyTone and Carl's Jr, the fast food chain.

So any mention of the above and she gets paid.
Ad.ly said they limit the advertizing tweets to one per day so as not to annoy her followers.

This has prompted many Twitter user to question this whole thing. If you are getting paid to advertiser and Tweet you need to have a label letting people know it is a sponsored Tweet.

Google phone Nexus One likely to launch on Jan 5th?

Tech websites all over the internet are abuzz with the News of the Google phone Nexus One making it's debut on Jan 5th. The much awaited phone has been much in the news and if all the news flying around is to be believed than we are going to see the new phone at a press conference on Jan 5.

Google has scheduled a press event for Tuesday, January 5 at its Mountain View, California, headquarters. Though the company hasn’t mentioned Nexus One, the invitation mentions Android, Google’s mobile operating system for phones, and the company is widely expected to show the device that has had smartphone industry watchers buzzing for weeks.

It’s a move straight out of the Apple playbook. In January, 2007, Apple famously upstaged CES when it unveiled the first iPhone at an event in San Francisco — even as most technology journalists and executives were huddled in Las Vegas for the trade show.

Below are some specs of the phone we found on GadgetVenue

The Nexus One will be a tri-band phone (900/1700/2100 MHz) UTMS and quad-band GSM which allows it to work on the T-Mobile network in the US. Features include a 3.7 inch WVGA AMOLED touchscreen that according to one person who had a look at the phone said it was the best looking screen they had seen.
The Nexus One will run Android 2.1 and be capable of transferring data at 7.2Mbps where networks support this. The processor inside the phone will be a Qualcomm Snapdragon running at a snappy 1GHz. The phone will have four illuminated soft keys primarily for Back, Menu, Home and Search. A tri-colour LED will be used in the device for notifications and charge status. Haptic feedback is to be included in the phone. Other features are the fairly standard A-GPS, Accelerometer, Light sensor and a proximity sensor along with a compass, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3.5mm headphone jack and active noise cancellation. The camera is 5 megapixels and will be capable of using the A-GPS for geotagging shots. An LED flash can be used for lighting close subjects and the phone will have 2x digital zoom. For memory the phone will have 512MB RAM and 512MB of flash memory and will include a 4GB MicroSD card with 32GB cards being supported.

We know you're itching to get your hands on a Nexus One -- Google's managed to build buzz here the way only a couple companies in the world know how. Unfortunately, it sounds like you're going to need to cross your fingers (or pull out that eBay emergency stash) to get one out of the gate, because we've got some intel here suggesting that it'll be available only by "invitation" at first. Our tipster doesn't have information on how those invites are going to be determined, other than the fact that it's Google doing the inviting -- if we had to guess, current registered developers are a strong possibility -- but the good news, we suppose, is that T-Mobile will apparently sell the phone directly at some to-be-determined point in the future. Oh, but that's not all -- we've got specs, too. Lots of them. Here are the highlights, but follow the break for the whole shebang:

  • Android 2.1
  • 11.5mm thick
  • 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM, 4GB microSD in-box expandable to 32GB
  • 5 megapixel camera with mechanical AF and LED flash
  • HSPA 900 / 1700 / 2100, 7.2Mbps down and 2Mbps up -- in other words, yes to T-Mobile 3G and no to AT&T 3G, though you'll still be fine on EDGE
  • 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display

Indonesia court dismisses Facebook deformation case.

An Indonesian court on Tuesday freed a woman charged with deformation for sending an e-mail to friends telling them that the hospital that diagnosed her had got it wrong. Prita Mulysari had written to about 20 of her friends about being misdiagnosed with dengue fever at the hospital, when in fact she had mumps.

This post was later reposted without her knowledge on sites like Facebook.

The Omni International hospital then filed a case against her stating that this e-mail would tarnish the reputation of the hospital's doctors.

The hospital earlier this month offered to drop its civil charge against Ms Mulysari if she apologised.
But she opted instead to challenge the fine of 204 million rupiah ($21,400, £13,320) - much more than a year's salary for most Indonesians - in the Supreme Court.
That court decision has not yet been reached, but donations worth $50,000 so far have been collected to help her if necessary.
If she does not need to pay the fine she will donate the money to charity.
This particular case garnered a lot of attention and fulled public anger and a demand for legal reform.

Arrested on May 13, Mulyasari spent three weeks in custody while she was still breastfeeding her second child.
Public anger at her detention, symbolised by a Facebook support group with more than 100,000 members, forced authorities to release her and bring her before the courts.

Todung Mulya Lubis, a prominent lawyer and rights activist, said defamation should not be included in Indonesia's criminal code and said the verdict was a victory for freedom of speech.
"If she has been declared free by the court, it means the court respects freedom of speech rights," he said.
Slamet Yuono, Mulyasari's lawyer, said his client was considering a civil suit against the hospital if it did not apologise. Hospital officials could not immediately be contacted.
The case has thrown a spotlight on other examples where ordinary Indonesians appear to have been treated harshly by the country's legal system.
Earlier this year, a grandmother in central Java received a suspended sentence for the theft of three cocoa pods, while a family was arrested for collecting left-over kapok tree fibres, often used for sleeping material, off the ground in a plantation.

AT&T resumes sales of the iPhone in New York

We had reported 24 hours ago that AT&T had stopped selling iPhone in most parts of New York on their online site. Apparently it has resumed sales and act as though nothing ever happened. This is something they might have learned from Apple.

Some bloggers have felt that AT&T was unable to handle traffic in high density areas which other speculated it might have happened due to some minor glitch which has since worked itself out.

Whatever maybe the case consumers in New York can now order the iPhone online from AT&T.

Northrup told NPR whatever the cause, it doesn't look good for AT&T:
From a PR standpoint, it makes them look bad that they've just quietly cut off sales without making an announcement. If they had announced this and said this is why we're remitting iPhone sales in the New York metro area, I think people would still be annoyed, but at least they'd understand why, and at least there'd be a straight answer from AT&T as to why this is.

Indian Minister Shashi Tharoor criticized for Twitter Remarks

Shashi Tharoor, Indian ministry of state of external affairs has used Twitter account once again to show his displeasure of the new visa norms.

Under the previous rule foreigners with a 5 or 10 year visa could stay in the county for 180 days before the have to leave and allowed to reenter. They would simply fly to a neighbouring county and fly back in again. The rule remains the same except after the 180 day limit. Foreigners would need to leave and not return before two months.

Foreign ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash said last week the new guidelines were issued "to facilitate bonafide tourists" and that immigration authorities could still allow tourists who leave India to re-enter if they produced a "detailed itinerary" and ticket bookings.
The ministry is probing why its Chicago consulate granted multiple visas to a Pakistani-American, David Coleman Headley, who is accused of helping plan the Mumbai siege in which 166 people died.
Tharoor said the new visa rules would alienate tourists and cost the economy millions of dollars.
But Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna rebuked the junior minister, saying such sensitive policy matters should not be discussed on the Internet.
"If there are any (negative) perceptions, then I think they should be sorted out within the four walls of the two ministries," said Krishna, referring to the foreign and home ministries.
Tharoor, a former UN undersecretary general, defended himself in Monday's edition of the Hindustan Times newspaper, saying he was only drawing attention to the larger debate on security.
Tharoor ignited controversy in September when he joked on Twitter about flying economy class with "holy cow" politicians in response to new government austerity measures.
Cows are considered sacred in Hindu-majority India and Tharoor faced resignation calls from the opposition and even some members of his ruling Congress Party.

Tharoor tweeted yesterday asking whether tightening of the visa norms made any sense and if it would actually “protect” security as “(the) 26/11 killers had no visas”. He said this despite the government — and his own ministry — announcing a relaxation in the new visa rules last week.
He has been criticized by External Affairs Minister S.M Krishna.
Rebuking his ministerial colleague Shashi Tharoor for airing his opposition to new visa rules, External Affairs Minister SM Krishna on Monday said the government will go by the home ministry's guidelines and stressed that differences over issues should not be discussed in public.

"We have gone along with home ministry on the visa issue," Krishna told reporters when asked about Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor's remarks on Twitter, a social networking site, criticising the government for its new visa regulations.
New regulations were introduced November 4 in the wake of disclosures about the abuse of tourist visas by 26/11 suspect David Coleman Headley.
The home ministry issued a directive that foreign nationals having a long-term multi-entry Indian tourist visa must have a mandatory two-month gap between two visits. The new guidelines elicited protests from the US and British governments.
"Well, these issues are not to be discussed in public," Krishna said.
"If there are any perceptions, they should be sorted out within the four walls of the two ministries," he said.
In his tweets, Tharoor questioned whether the new visa restriction would actually strengthen security as the "26/11 killers had no visas".
"My only role is to object to them strongly. MEA (ministry of external affairs) officials are discussing them with MoHA (ministry of home affairs) which imposed them."
On December 26, Tharoor said: "Issue is not security vs (versus) tourism, but whether visa restrictions protect our security. 26/11 killers had no visas."

Found on the Sakaal Times.

While tweeting, Tharoor had wondered whether tightening of the visa norms made any sense and if it would actually "protect" security as "26/11 killers had no visas".
Tharoor had asked whether India would allow terrorists to make the country a "less welcoming" destination. Krishna emphasised that there was no ambiguity on the visa issue and the MEA and Home Ministry had same views. "We have gone along with the Home Ministry with reference to the visa and other issues. As far as Ministry of External Affairs is concerned, there is no ambiguity," he said.
Meanwhile, unfazed by reservations from nations like the US and UK, the government made it clear that the tighter norms put in place in the wake of David Headley case will not be withdrawn as national security cannot be compromised with. The new rules have been formulated after considering all relevant aspects and giving the top most priority to national security, senior Home Ministry officials said.
Justifying tightening of rules, they cited changes made by several countries like the US and UK after terror strikes. They insisted that the government has not received any complaint from any country, including the US or the UK, over the new visa rules, but "clarity" had been sought by Washington which have been addressed. "When some foreign missions based in India sought clarity, we told them that if someone has to worry about tourists' arrival, it is India and not any other nation," the officials said.
The Tourism Ministry also dismissed Tharoor's concerns over tourism, saying the new rules will have no impact on the inflow of such visitors. "Tourists always come here on a short visit so this will not affect their arrivals," minister of state for tourism Sultan Ahmed said while dubbing Tharoor's tweet as a "joke".

Escaped fugitive keeps updating Facebook page.

Craig Lynch has been taunting police from his Facebook page. Apparently the queer thing about his escape from prison is the way he did it and the timing. He escaped when he was serving time during the end of his release and escaped when on day out.

He now has over 3,400 fans and he is grumbling that the original page had over 4,000 fans and was deleted by Facebook.

This is the latest update found on his page.
