What is Linkedin Skills and how does it work

Linkedin has a new feature that they have been testing in Beta. It is called 'Skills' and what it does is that you enter a skill you want to know more about and you are taken to a page where you can track that skill further  the purpose says Linkedin is this 'Discover the skills you need to succeed. Learn what you need to know from the thousands of hot, up-and-coming skills we’re tracking.' This is a feature that is still very raw and in the over. You will really need to wait a while to actually benefit from it. The concept is very simple it is like a Wikipedia article on a particular skill but with steroids. There are people with that particular skill who can contribute and speak more about that particular skill. In Fact there are a few skills listed and when you click on that particular skill you are taken to a separate page which first has that skill as listed on Wikipedia. So if you click on 'Interface Builders' under iPhone you see the Wikipedia article related to the skill with the ability to add that skill to your profile. So people who visit your profile c an see that skill and associate you with it. You can add 50 total of such skills to your profile.

Below the Wikipedia article there is a list of interface builder profiles and below that interface builder groups and on the left related skills. On the right you see a list of fastest growing skills and below that Interface Builder Jobs. This is the whole package. You can really use this page to research skill and find what is lacking in your profile or your professional life. You can use this to also see where the market is headed and what upgradations you might require to enhance your career. For group skills listed you also find featured professionals. This becomes another learning avenue.

How to find the skills page on Linkedin
1. Login
2. Click on More
3. Click on Skills Beta

Check it out now to stay updated on the skills relevant to your job and industry.

Google+ first flaw discovered regarding privacy

Google+ the social network from Google which has Google users scrambling for invites has run into it's first privacy issue. Basically the social network works on the concept of circles, so you can create circles which include friends, relatives and co-workers to name a few. You can post an update to whichever circle you desire and therefore you can keep your updates private and share only among you pre-approved circle. Everything works fine and your circle is happy, no flaws. Wrong there has been a flaw discovered and it is huge, it is a problem. Once you update your status people in your circle can re-port you update to whoever you want. This is big and it surely is a problem. This throws all the privacy you want to maintain out of the window.

This loophole was first spotted by the Financial TimesFor now, Google+ users can disable reposting by clicking on a button that appears as soon as you publish a post, but there is no way to universally shut off the feature.

What is Google+ and how does it work

Google has come up with an answer to Facebook and it's called Google+. The history of Google's social networking tryouts as you will remember started with Buzz and then came Google +1 and now there is Google+. With this Google hopes to get traction into the world of social networking and gain credibility in a world which has eluded them till now.

How does Google+ work
Unlike Facebook Google+ invites you to create circles, so you can share only among your circles. The way this works is that you can create a circle like your inner cicrle of friends, a circle with only your college buddies etc. They have learned from Facebook's mistakes where many people lost their jobs because their boss was a part of their social network and they had posted something inappropriate. With circles this takes care of all those problems as you have different circles and you can share accordingly.
Hangouts: create one to let you friends know when you are free so you guys can hangout together and chat via video together. This will be a big thing and if you got good internet speed then this is for you.
Sparks: Create a list of stuff you really like and watch it when you free.
Instant Uploads  Shoot videos and photos and upload them instantaneously to Google +

Right, you get the picture. A social network where a lot has been learned form other social networks mistakes and it is all ready for you to use. Right now you cannot join as it is on a limited free trial. Sign up with Google+ and you will get your invite as soon as it is ready.

@AnonymousIRC takes over from Lulzsec dumps Zimbabwe Governmental Info online

After 50 days of seeking to cause mayhem online the Lulzsec have disbanded. The pirate ship is off the seas and safe in some nameless port, it remains to be seen for how long. AnonymousIRC seems to have taken the banner and carrying on the work. The momentum has not stopped at all and the latest info from the hacktivist group is that they have posted the entire Zimbabwe governmental info on Megaupload. If you click the link now you will be told that the info you are trying to access is temporarily unavailable please try again later. We however have a got a screenshot for you.
The group that seem to be having trouble of their own with their own chat servers getting knocked off with a DDoS attack. It seems fellow hackers are also out to prove themselves and maybe Lulzsec quiet at the right time. Things are heating up and hacker communities are against each other ever since this all began.

AnonymousIRC now have over 100,000 followers on Twitter and seem to be getting more intense into their work.

If you would like to follow the Twitter chatter about the topic use the hastag #Anonymous #AntiSec #lulzsec.

How the homeless can find food and shelter on Twitter and Facebook

Social Media can really come as a saving grace for the people you'd least expect it to help - the homeless. CNN did a cover story about how the homeless have turned to Twitter to help themselves find food and shelter. Another story about how Twitter is actually helping people in the real world. Advice given to people who know they re going to be homeless is to make sure you keep your cellphone and laptop. with all the Wi-Fi hotspots available people these days really do not need to have an internet connection.

wearevisible.com was set up precisely for this purpose. When you visit the site the first thing you can see is it's simplicity and help pages to create a Gmail ID, set up a Facebook page, create a Twitter profile and do you think you need to blog. essentially showing that just because a person is homeless does not mean they do not have a voice. The homeless can now use Facebook and Twitter to find a voice and help themselves find food and shelter and get on with their lives. Visit the website to know more and read stories about how homeless people are helping themselves and others survive.

What is a DDoS attack

With all the news LulzSec created before departing it will be interesting to note than many of thier attacks were DDoS attacks. DDoS attacks or Distributed Denial Of Service attacks seek to render an internet site or service from functioning efficiently or stop working completely.

There are two general forms of DDoS attacks, those that crash services and those that flood services. The flood of incoming messages to a target system essentially forces it to shut down and rendered useless. The Hacktavist generally has a compromised PC know as a 'Bot' under his control through which he controls a group of compromised computers known as a 'Botnet', through which he perpetrates his attacks. With this 'Zombie Army' a hacker can seek to compromise an internet website and the ones targeted are usually the high profile sites, which in turn gives the hacker the boasting points he needs to gain respect and admiration among the hacking community. Kind of like a resume of jobs well done and skill levels achieved.

A concentration of 20,000 computers can take down 90% of internet websites. In a typical DDoS attack, a hacktervist begins by exploiting a vulnerability in one computer system and making it the DDoS master. It is from this master system that the hacker then identifies and communicates with other systems that can be compromised. The hacker then loads cracking tools available on the Internet on sometimes thousands of compromised systems. With a single command, the hacker then instructs the controlled machines to launch one of many flood attacks against a specified target. The inundation of packets to the target causes a denial of service.

when to post on a friends wall and when to send a message on Facebook

There is a common question especially among newbies who gets to see things that I post on my friends wall. Whenever you post something on a friends wall it will depend on your friends privacy settings on who he or she has chosen to share with. When posting on a friends wall it is important to remember that it now belongs to your friends profile and you do not own that posting. Therefore when you want to send something personal that only your friend should know about, it is always better to send the person a message rather than posting on their wall.

This post is being created to help people remember that on Facebook most everything you do is in the public eye and if there is something to be shared it should be done personally and therefore a message would seem ideal and much better than directly posting things on friends walls.

This is going to also be a big hit among Marriott employees and people wanting to join the company can head over and play the game now. http://www.facebook.com/marriottjobsandcareers.

2011 Lulz Boat Odyssey - Final Cut - The Lulzsec Song

The Lulz Boat has a song, pirates riding the seas of cyberspace. Lulzsec seems to be in the public eye and also entertain with this new Odyssey. Who would have thought that with all the hacking the public would also be provided with music. The group has been responsible for several high profile attacks including Sony, PBS and an FBI website to name a few.

Here are the words and the video below.
This is it! The best hacker/1337 song ever made. Listen for your self!!

Props to Fox for input on over 1/2 the new lines. W00T!

What is Turntable.fm and how does it work

Turntable.fm is a very simple concept and excellent if you are a DJ and would like to share your music with the rest of the world. Other users can listen to your music and vote. There is a meter with two options once you login 'Awsome' or 'Lame'. So you can upload your favorite tracks and music and let others listen and you get noticed. It is built on a kind of Chat platform that all of us are familiar with. once you login you need to choose your room and join that room. You can then listen to the songs from other users and DJ's and vote for the one you like. You can also upload your own tracks and hit the play button. This will ensure your music is queued and will play when your turn comes.

You also have the option to create your won room and other people can join in and the process continues. You can also choose to join a random room and get hit with a surprise. You can also see which rooms your friends are in.

How Bands can use the new service.
You can create a room with your Bands name and share the same on Facebook and Twitter and invite your fans to login anytime to listen. Let people chat about you and spread the word.

How DJ's can use Turntable.fm
Login and start sharing your music, join different rooms and let people listen to your creations. You can also have your own room and let your stuff play. Fans can always find your room to listen to your stuff and chat with other users.

Once users like your stuff they can become fans and start following you. This way you get to stay connected and let your fans know what's going on and new music you've created. Once your music is liked users can use the Facebook or Twiiter link to share the same with their friends and followers.

There are also DJ points, which can be got by either awsoming a song or lameing a song. As users earn more points, they unlock different avatars. You can also add the song to iTunes, Spotify, Last.fm, or their Turntable queue.

Login in it is simply amazing, you will need a Facebook ID to login only if one of your friends is already a member. Should not be a problem since that already have 140K users. Chances are one of your friends is already a member.

Caution: Addictive

The music I discovered was simple amazing, really really good. Please share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Lytro Light Field Camera: what it is and how does it work

There is all this news all over the internet about this new camera it is called 'Lytro'. What it allows you to do is basically this, take pictures now and focus later. Sounds odd well not really, with a camera like this you can take all the pictures you want and later sit and focus them and get the best shots you want. This is really good let say if you having a party and you just want to take pictures as they are happening. This camera will let you do just that without having o loose the moment. After all the moment is everything and that is what really matters to photographers. Capturing the moment and the right mood, with conventional cameras you just might loose the right shot with having to spend time on focusing and trying o get the right angle.

So how does Lytro work
The Lytro camera captures far more light data than conventional cameras. This is accomplished with a special sensor called microlens array. Which puts the equivalent of many lenses in a small display. Coupled with sophisticated software that allows users to switch points of focus.

In short: The camera has multiple small lenses, this is in additional to the traditional digital camera lens and the sensor. These lenses mean the device can capture more light from a much larger range of directions. By being able to collect more, these types of cameras have more capabilities than traditional ones do,  refocusing after a shot has been taken, crisp images, and 3D function.

And when you take the time to focus, your photograph turns into an amazing 3D art with crisp, high-definition details. Lytro calls these pictures living pictures,  claiming that this movement from 2D to 3D photos is just as revolutionary as the movement from film to digital. Please use the comments section below to tell us what you think.

No fuss focus.

Click away. Shoot first, focus after. That's right, after. You can't miss.

Shares the magic.

Immersive sharing with living pictures makes “wish you were here” come true.

Speed, indeed.

From sleep to snap in under a second. Instant on. Bye-bye shutter lag.

Travels light.

Portable and stylish enough to bring along, from the beach to the bistro.

This is what Lytro has to say about this newest technology

Light Field Defined

What is the light field?

The light field is a core concept in imaging science, representing fundamentally more powerful data than in regular photographs. The light field fully defines how a scene appears. It is the amount of light traveling in every direction through every point in space – it’s all the light rays in a scene. Conventional cameras cannot record the light field.

Light Field Capture

How does a light field camera capture the light rays?

Recording light fields requires an innovative, entirely new kind of sensor called a light field sensor. The light field sensor captures the color, intensity and vector direction of the rays of light. This directional information is completely lost with traditional camera sensors, which simply add up all the light rays and record them as a single amount of light.

Light Field Processing

How do light field cameras make use of the additional information?

By substituting powerful software for many of the internal parts of regular cameras, light field processing introduces new capabilities that were never before possible. Sophisticated algorithms use the full light field to unleash new ways to make and view pictures.
Relying on software rather than components can improve performance, from increased speed of picture taking to the potential for capturing better pictures in low light. It also creates new opportunities to innovate on camera lenses, controls and design.

Picture Capabilities

How are light field pictures different?

The way we communicate visually is evolving rapidly, and people’s expectations are changing in lockstep. Light field cameras offer astonishing capabilities. They allow both the picture taker and the viewer to focus pictures after they’re snapped, shift their perspective of the scene, and even switch seamlessly between 2D and 3D views. With these amazing capabilities, pictures become immersive, interactive visual stories that were never before possible – they become living pictures.

SnapDeal is currently India's leading coupon site. Built on the lines of Groupon but with some differences. SnapDeal offers daily deals that can be up to 90% off on the original price. Offering the best vouchers and discounts depending on the city where you live with Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai topping the list.

To use the site you will firstly need to subscribe with your email ID or mobile number. Daily deals are sent to you, if you see a deal you like simply click on 'buy' and make payments choosing the various options available (Credit Debit, Online banking, cash card etc). You will then receive your deal vouchers on you mail ID or phone. Show your voucher at the merchants place and collect your deal. Fairly simple and easy to use.

There are a few differences between the way SnapDeal and Groupon work and most notable of these are that there are no 'ground floor' numbers of deals that need to be sold before the deal will go live. Once the deal is live on the site it is good to go and you can click on 'Buy' and claim your deal. Another notable feature is that SnapDeal will also sell physical merchandise. Visit them at http://www.snapdeal.com

An Indian village that was helped by the SnapDeal team has renamed their village 'SnapDeal.com Nagar'. The team sponsored handpumps so that people from the village would not have to walk two miles just to get clean drinking water. The previous name of the village was 'Shiv Nagar'. Nagar meaning Town.

Mafia Wars Icing Just Got Cooler

This post is part of the official releases form Mafia Wars and can be found on their official blog.
Great news, mobsters! We’re very excited to announce a major upgrade to Fighting that makes it easier for you to become the ultimate icing machine!
Most exciting is that the Fighting results screen has undergone a complete redesign based on feedback we’ve received from the player community! The new layout eliminates the need to scroll up and down in a frenzy to find new opponents, and, thanks to a new health bar, you can now see how much damage you are doing and how close you are to icing your opponent! Attack them with everything you have and watch their health bar melt down like an icicle in a desert!
Other exciting additions include two new ways to help keep you cool: Kills now count as two ices instead of one, and, if another player snatches an ice you were trying to get, you can choose to attack them as payback! In Mafia Wars, revenge is a dish best served ice-cold.
All of that is exciting, but chill, ‘cause there’s more! As you sharpen your icing skills, you may find some new items for your own use and also some new attack and defense boosts that you can send to your friends. These new boosts apply a percentage of your overall attack/defense points to your friend’s stats. When you possess these boosts, you can choose to turn them on and off during a fight to strategically optimize your performance while you put another mobster on ice!
We can’t wait for everyone to try the new Fighting experience, but, due to the excitingly massive scope of the feature, we will regrettably need to roll it out slowly to ensure stability. You will know you’ve been upgraded when you return to the game and discover that your Fighting screen has become much, much cooler.

How to use Google's Me on the web and control how much of your personal data appears on the Internet

Google's new product called 'Me On The Web' is all about you and how you appear on the web. This tool has been built to help you manage your online identity and control what appears when people search for you on the world wide web. If you find something that is unwanted you also have the right and means to remove it. Google has really opened itself up to the public with this and now appears much more transparent.

How does 'Me on the web' work
The way it works is fairly simple for those who have been tech savvy enough to setup Google alerts for themselves will be well aware of this. When you set up a Google alert you can enter you name and Google will send you alerts each time you name is found on the net. Me on the web takes this a little further and makes it simple enough for everyone to use.

What you need
You definitely need a Google account since this service is a part of Google Dashboard.

How to set up Me on the web.
2. Signin with your Google account
3. Click on setup search results for your data
4. So you can set up alerts for whenever your name appears on Google search results
5. You can enter your email Id to know every time there is a new search result appearing on Google attached to your mail ID. You can also click on view results to know what Google has indexed on it's search engine right now regarding you. So you can set up an alert for everytime there is a fresh mention of your name on the web, your mail ID or any other search time you would like to keep a track of.

How to remove unwanted content.
It gets a little tricky over here as Google says they do not control and own the web and to get content removed from the search engine you will need to contact the site's webmaster.Google only indexes and does not own websites but this feature will help you find yourself and if you see something you don't like you can actually contact the site that has your name and identity on it and do something about it.

So head over to your Google Dashboard to check the whole thing out.
