The Trump-Xi Beijing Summit: What the Smiling Handshakes Won't Tell You

On Thursday, Donald Trump will walk into the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, shake Xi Jinping's hand, and declare it a great meeting. There will be announcements. There will be numbers — billions of dollars in Chinese purchase commitments, a new bilateral mechanism with an important-sounding name, possibly a joint statement on Iran. Trump will post on Truth Social. Markets will rally briefly. Pundits will argue about who won. None of that will tell you what actually happened. What is actually happening in Beijing this week is something more consequential and more uncomfortable than the summit theatre will reveal: two leaders of two deeply mutually dependent superpowers, both of whom need this meeting to succeed for entirely different reasons, sitting across a table in a world that has already moved past the assumptions that defined their last nine months of negotiations.     Yeah seriously...It's really annoying when these games say "coming soon" and nothing comes for months and months. What you should have said is "coming sometime in the distant future. Don't hold your breath". Or how about nothing at all until you have some kind of actual idea of when you will be done. Eh? >:[

    Of course I do realize your scheme. We keep signing in every day hoping for "coming soon" to be "now arrived!".We keep playing for your promise of something more exciting, and the longer we play the more we have invested into the game thus not wanting to stop playing. Then, the more we spiral down the madness hole the more likely we are to spend real money for a lot of dumb crap we wouldn't have had you just given us what we wanted to begin with. I wish these games would just die off. You guys are snakes.
